Frequently asked questions...

Here are a certain number of questions that are frequently asked by our visitors.

Question :
Stone is a cold material !

Answer : WRONG ! Natural tender limestone very soon picks up the room temperature and it is pleasant to touch. There is no comparison between it and hard stone such as marble, granite, etc and moreover, its light colour suits all styles.

Question :
Stone is porous and so would be catastrophic to put in a kitchen. What about stains ?

Answer : Years of experience and research have led us to develop a resin-based surface treatment which conserves stone. By hardening its surface it becomes shock-resistant ; as it becomes perfectly waterproof, and any stains such as oil, water, wine, vinegar or tomato sauce can be wiped off. This treatment does not alter its colour nor the texture of the stone. It is also advised to use (indispensable !) it on floor flags, staircases and fireplaces (to make them easier to clean) and it enables the stone to " breathe ".

Question :
The weight of a bathroom made of stone means it is impossible to build into an apartment ?

Answer :We are conscientioous professionals and we apply the standards imposed in using stone, especially the D.U.T. which stipulate that the weight must not exceed 350 kg per m2 floor surface (except for fireplaces for which is is necessary to make preliminary studies). Moreover, we do core sampling on pillars and columns in compliance with earthquake resistant standards.

Question :
The price for designing, making and fitting a kitchen must be prohibitive ?

Answer : With the same quality of product (excluding electrical appliances and bathroom equipment) all our prices are competitive compared to more traditional products. Our main advantage is that we use noble material and our natural solid stone guarantees a long life and long term investment giving a charming inimitable patina as the years go by.

How to use stone better thanks to standardisation

French standard XP B 100 601
Since March 1995, Natural Stone standard XP B 100 601 has been the highest performer in France, and also in the world. Published by AFNOR, it enables the possible uses of each stone to be defined , from different criteria for use, depending on what the stone will be used for in building and also the climate of the place where it will be built.

Traditional standards
France also uses more traditional standards defining the physidal and mechanical characteristics as well as the specific dimensional tolerance corresponding to the type of product : paving stone, border, etc.

Unified Technical Documents (DUT - in french DTU)
Most products meant for use in building and the road, rail and waterways network, are subjected to specific standards which fix the rules of art : the Unified Technical Documents. Set out by the General Standards Committee, the D.T.U. are :

  • Technical clauses mentioning the technical conditions to be applied when choosing and working with materials which must be enforced by the layers.
  • Calculation rules enabling the piece of work to be dimensioned according to certain criteria
  • Special clauses decreeing the "technical-administrative clauses"

European standard
European standards concerning natural stone are being set out, under the aegis of four technical committees appointed by the European Standardisation Council (C.E.N.)

France is head of the TC246 Natural Stone technical committee defining trial methods to be applied to all products made of stone.
